This letter is to inform you of certain issues concerning our Golf Altorreal Society.
Regarding the golf itself, we wish to show you the competition calendar for 2020. As in past years we have included in the calendar some of the best amateur competitions which are taking place in Spain. We wish to thank all the sponsors of these competitions, on behalf of all the Club members, for showing their confidence in us for the organization of these events.
With this calendar we have tried to include different kinds of competitions: points system, strokes, men and ladies, national categories, age, pairs, teams etc. with the idea of encouraging club members to take part, without any discrimination.
The final dates for some competitions are still not confirmed. Once these have been confirmed we will let you know. The calendar can suffer changes and new competitions may be added.
In what refers to the actual state of the maintenance of the course, the Board of Directors has decided to invest in the improvement of the greens and aprons on the course, over a period of not less than 3 years.
The greens at this moment in time are in a bad way due to soil depletion caused by a number of factors:
- The greens have not been renewed in 26 years.
- The invasion by weeds such as Paspalun, Cucullu, Poa etc. for the treatment of which nothing exists at this moment.
- The very bad quality of the water used for watering.
- The legal prohibition in the use of efficient plant protection products.
A new grass has resulted from investigation, belonging to the Bermuda grass family, called Sunday Ultradwarf, highly recommended by all specialists as being ideal for our climate and with a high capacity regarding support of the bad quality of the water we use. It also has the advantage of being usable in a short period of 10 to 12 weeks, always in the season of maximum temperatures.
It also has its disadvantages, the biggest and most notable being the latency period, which as with all the Bermuda grasses happens in the winter months. We think that this latency period could last maybe 3 months, but as it hasn’t been implanted in inland golf courses like ours, we only have the reference from coastal courses which usually have 3º to 5º more than us in the winter period. It has already been implanted in 9 holes in La Sella and Almerimar.
Another disadvantage is the hardness and speed of the greens and
players will suffer a long period of adaptation.
We are going to start 2020 renewing 4 greens and we are studying at the moment which greens to select so that we can plan to finish the total renovation in 3 years. The period for th4 renovation will be from the 22nd June to the 1st September. The course will not be closed and we will condition temporary greens on the holes chosen. We hope the you understand and accept the inconvenience caused.
We are also going to improve the Clubhouse installations in order to make more comfortable the restaurant area, and we will continue to improve the landscaping throughout the golf course.
We would also like to take this opportunity to ask your help in keeping our course in optimum condition. This means repairing pitch marks, raking bunkers, replacing divots, and not throwing refuse on the course itself. Also respect other players, letting them through when we lose contact with the match in front and, please, respect the signs and indications and also the marshal’s instructions.
Remember that we have some excellent services in the club we have introduced to try and improve our members’ life style.
